Spring Ice Shows

All OAK Arena students are invited and encouraged to participate in our annual spring ice show on May 3, 2008.  Anyone participating must be enrolled in Session 4 and 5 of the Learn to Skate program.  Rehearsal times will be held throughout both sessions.  Watch for additional upcoming details!

Snowplow Sam and Tot Advanced Classes

Ages:  4-5

Class Meets Once Per Week for 50 Minutes

 

These programs are designed to teach the fundamentals of skating for children ages 4-5 with little or no skating experience.  Skaters will learn balance and skating skills in an age appropriate and fun environment.  Class includes 30 minutes of instructional lesson time.  Classes follow closely in curriculum, and some classes may be combined.  All participants must register as USFSA Basic Skills Members, which is a $10.00 annual fee, not included in program prices.

Basic 1-8

Ages:  6-17

Class Meets Once Per Week for 60 minutes

 

This program introduces the fundamental moves - forward skating, backward skating, stops, crossovers, and turns.  Upon completion of the Basic Levels, skaters will have a grasp on the sport, enabling them to advance to the more specialized areas of skating:  free skating, dance, pairs, and synchronized.  Basic 1 - 6 classes include 45 minutes of instructional time.  Basic 7 - 8 classes include 1 hour of instructional time.  All participants must register as USFSA Basic Skills Members, which is a $10.00 annual fee, not included in program prices.

Free Skate 1-6

Ages:  6 & up

Class Meets Once Per Week for 60 Minutes

 

Free Skate 1-6 is the next step for skaters graduating from the Basic 8 level.  Each Free Skate level is divided into four sections:  Moves in the Field, Dance Sequence, Spins, and Jumps.  These levels are designed so when a skater graduates from Free Skate 6, they have a strong foundation on which to build, showing good use of edges, all basic skills mastered, all spin positions acquired, and every jump learned.  Class includes 1 hour of instructional time.  All participants must register as USFSA Basic Skills Members, which is a $10.00 annual fee, not included in program prices.

Intro to Competitive Skating

Ages:  6 & up

Class Meets Once Per Week for 75 Minutes

Limit: 10 Students

 

This class is designed to give the skater an introduction to competitive skating.  The student will learn a short music routine, incorporating skills from the highest level they have passed.  The first day of class will consist of a 40 minute off-ice informational class and a 30 minute on-ice group class.  The next five weeks will run once a week and consist of a 15 minute private lesson with one of our highly qualified instructors and a 60 minute practice time.  The last  week of class will consist of an exhibition where the students will be able to show off their hard work to a small audience!  This class is perfect for anyone interested in competing or performing ice shows.

Adult

Ages:  18 and up

Class Meets Once Per Week for 60 Minutes

 

This program is designed for the beginning adult skater.  It will promote physical fitness and improve balance and coordination while learning proper skating techniques.  Divided into four levels, adult skaters will progress at an individual rate while being challenged and motivated.  Class includes 1 hour of instructional time.  All participants must register as USFSA Basic Skills Members, which is a $10.00 annual fee, not included in program prices.

  • Gloves, mittens, and helmet recommended.

  • Snow pants recommended for 4 and 5 year olds.

  • Check in at the front desk for the first day.

  • Only students enrolled in program allowed on practice ice.

  • Parents may observe classes from Upper Level Spectator Area.  No spectators allowed on benches during class or practice times.

There is a $10.00 fee assessed to your program registration the first time you register, which enrolls you for a United States Figure Skating Basic Skills membership for one year.  As a member, you will receive the following benefits to make your skating experience more fun and rewarding:

Private Skating Lessons

 

All of the OAK Arena Figure Skating Instructors are available for private lessons**!  Our highly qualified staff will work with you one on one to develop the skills learned in the Learn to Skate Classes.  Competitive skaters can work with a private instructor to design programs that are perfectly suited to their artistic style and abilities.  Ask an instructor for more details on how you can take advantage of this offer available exclusively to our Learn to Skate students!

**Students must be enrolled in the Learn to Skate Program to be eligible for private lessons.

Freestyle Ice Times

 

Looking to practice your moves?

This time is reserved exclusively for figure skating!

 

Tuesday 3:00pm - 4:00pm
Thursday 3:00pm - 4:00pm

       Price:  $5.00 per half hour

 

COACHES

All instructors who are not employees of the Kankakee Valley Park District and OAK Orthopedic Sports Arena, and who wish to instruct during a contract ice time or public skate time at OAK Orthopedic Sports Arena, will be charged a coaching fee. The coaching fee will be $5.00 per hour, which will need to be paid before the instructor takes the ice. All outside instructors will also need to keep a copy of their current liability insurance (through Ice Skating Institute, U.S. Figure Skating, or Professional Skaters Association) on file with the facility.
